One of my New Years goals for 2025 is to read 3 whole books a month. I say “whole” books because I have a terrible habit of starting five books and never finishing them. This year my book list (which you can find here) are mostly compiled of books I’ve started or bought in the past and never finished. I also try to pick at least one spiritual reading books a month. This post includes what I read this month.
I was intending to read The Catholic Family Volume III, Budgeting 101, and Characters of the Reformation for the month of January. Obviously not everything always goes the ways we want. I was so blessed to be able to go on a Spiritual Retreat at the end of January and so I needed to switch up my books in the end. I didn’t get a chance to read Characters of the Reformations, but I was able to read 3 other books on my retreat, which was nice.

What I Read in January
The Catholic Family Volume III
This book is written by one of my favorite Catholic authors of our age, Fr. Patrick Troadec. This is the 8th book of his that I have read and I have been so impressed with all of them. This book is exactly what all Catholic parents need to help them solidify their convictions in parenting. It covers Purity, the horrors of pornagraphy, the effects of screen time, and so much more. It is theologically sound, but also practically very easy and helpful to implement. I would recommend this book 100%. It was such an easy read and truly very insightful.
I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
Budgeting 101
I liked this book, but I don’t believe it is the best budgeting book. It does go through the basics, so it may benefit someone with little knowledge, but I didn’t find it covered as much as the personal finance class I took in college. I realize that a book wouldn’t, but I still feel it was inadequate. his book is a pretty easy read though.
I would give it 2 out of 5 stars.
The Trustful Surrender of Divine Providence
I’ve dealt with grief and this book gave me great comfort, but not in the way most would find comfort after a miscarriage. Knowing that everything is part of God’s design is very comforting. Obviously there is so much more to this book than that, but this part of the book mattered to me. I definitely recommend this book to every one. It has deeply strengthened my confidence in God.
I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
The Forty Dreams of St. John Bosco
This book is compilation of the dreams that our Lord had blessed St. John Bosco with in his lifetime. Some of these dreams are so beautiful and some are absolutely terrifying. It shows you the true value of purity and innocence. St. John Bosco had a true zeal for saving the souls of the poor and unwanted boys in his community and throughout the whole world.
I would definitely give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
What I Plan to Read for February
My reading plan for February are to read these books:
In This House of Brede by Rumer Godden
Characters of the Reformation by Hilaire Belloc
Successful Fathers by James B. Stenson
I already borrowed In This House of Brede from my local library so I need to read it by February 15th. I love historical nonfiction so reading Characters of the Reformation I’m definitely going to enjoy. Varying the length of the books is so important for me, that’s why In This House of Brede and Successful Father are in the same month because Successful Fathers is very short and the In This House is almost 400 pages.
